(Juliana Rose Pignataro) After Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren took a DNA test to determine if she had Native American ancestry, a Cherokee Nation official responded, calling such a test “useless.” In a statement, Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said the test was “not evidence for tribal affiliation.”

Warren released a DNA test on Monday showing that while the vast majority of her ancestry was European, there was “strong evidence” of Native American ancestry, “likely in the range of six to 10 generations ago.”

My Commentary: From the moment I read the news, a question burned in my head… “Was this ‘ex-cop’ employed as a police officer at any time during his career as a violent criminal?” So, I finally did a just little digging, and of course, with no surprise…

“DeAngelo was employed as a police officer by two different departments, in Exeter, Calif. from 1973 to 1976 and in Auburn from 1976 to 1979, when he was fired, Jones said. Jones said it’s believed DeAngelo committed the crimes during the time he was employed by the departments, but authorities are still looking into whether he committed any crimes while on duty.”

(Claire Bernish) Without laws to guide them, police around the country have begun collecting people’s DNA — even when no crime has been committed — using private labs which then store the genetic material for unknown periods to make identification simple in the event a crime is committed in the future.

Known generally as “stop and spit,” the practice of requesting the DNA of adults and juveniles during routine traffic stops and even basic interactions with police, ProPublica reports, is not only wholly unregulated and unlegislated, it is alarmingly common.
