After a stormy 16-week voyage across the Atlantic, Jane, a 14-year-old girl from southern England, would have been relieved to reach land when she scrambled ashore at Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in America, in August 1609.

But any sense of salvation was to be short-lived. For, soon afterwards, the colony began to starve.

Food was already scarce when seven ships — including the one Jane travelled on — arrived with another 300 settlers to add to the 100 or so trying to eke out an existence in the swampy outpost.

(Sara Cheshire, CNNIf you think school starts too early, you aren’t the only one.

A new policy statement published by the American Academy of Pediatrics is on the side of groggy students falling asleep at their desks and their parents who are tired of nagging them to get out of bed in the morning.

They say that lack of sleep in adolescents causes poor academic performance and poses a serious public health concern. Traffic accidents, depression and obesity can result, with schools that start too early contributing to the problem.

My CommentaryState education camps exist to teach conformity and obedience to the next generation of tax-serfs. These places are mental and spiritual graveyards – not conductive to thinking, nor to learning!
