(David Staples) Today’s truth bomb comes from Mayor Lisa Holmes of Morinville, just outside of Edmonton, a place like many other Canadian communities that has struggled to find the right balance with photo radar enforcement.

Morinville’s photo radar program started in 2009. It’s been run by a private contractor that reports to the town office. The program was soon raising $300,000 a year, but some felt there was too much focus on handing out tickets and generating revenue. Things got so heated that in 2014 Morinville held a plebiscite. () Mike De Nardo, the police chief for Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, apparently turned his gun on himself and committed suicide Thursday, not long after being relieved of his duties over an outside investigation.

According to the Sun Herald, De Nardo was being escorted from the police station by a pair of Hancock County deputies. Witnesses said a commotion broke out in the parking lot, and De Nardo shot himself. He was apparently alive and even conscious while heading to a hospital, where he died.

(Brenda Breslauer) Quinton Thomas is afraid to drive to work, to visit friends, or to the barber for a haircut. He’s afraid he’ll be pulled over and put in jail — not for some crime he’s committed but because he can’t afford to pay fines from traffic tickets issued long ago. He’s afraid he’ll be jailed because he’s driving while black in St. Louis County, Missouri.

“Traffic stops have cost me a lot of money, have cost my family money, and also have cost me time and jobs,” said Thomas, a 28-year-old construction worker.
